Did you ever see emoji text face like this ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) in chat conversations? This is a Lenny Face emoji or emoticon created with text characters. However, it is not possible to type some characters like upside down question mark using normal keyboard keys. The solution is to use unicode symbols in different combination and make different type of faces and other symbols. You can use decimal points or hexadecimal points with alt key to create these text faces. In this article, let us explain how to create simple emoji text face using alt code in Windows and option code in Mac.
Note that the symbols may look distorted on the browser, however they will look different when you copy paste depending on the application’s character encoding and font settings.
Text Face Emoticons with Alt Code
There are two ways to use alt code in Windows. First, let us explain how to create simple lenny face emoticon using decimal code with alt keys. The step by step procedure is given in the below table and you need to use the alt code with separate numeric pad on your keyboard.
Keys / Alt Code | Symbol | Final Shape |
Shift + 9 | ( | ( |
Space | ( | |
Alt + 0865 | ͡ | ( ͡ |
Alt + 0176 | ° | ( ͡° |
Space | ( ͡° | |
Alt + 0860 | ͜ | ( ͡° ͜ |
Alt + 0662 | ʖ | ( ͡° ͜ʖ |
Space | ( ͡° ͜ʖ | |
Alt + 0865 | ͡ | ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡ |
Alt + 0176 | ° | ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° ) |
Space | ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° | |
Shift + 0 | ) | ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° ) |
As you can see, with few key strokes you can create a beautiful lenny face emoticon ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° ). The second method is to use hexadecimal code with alt + x keys as given in the below table.
Keys / Alt + X | Symbol | Final Shape |
Shift + 9 | ( | ( |
Space | ( | |
0361 + Alt + X | ͡ | ( ͡ |
00B0 + Alt + X | ° | ( ͡° |
Space | ( ͡° | |
035C + Alt + X | ͜ | ( ͡° ͜ |
0296 + Alt + X | ʖ | ( ͡° ͜ʖ |
Space | ( ͡° ͜ʖ | |
0361 + Alt + X | ͡ | ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡ |
00B0 + Alt + X | ° | ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° ) |
Space | ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° | |
Shift + 0 | ) | ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° ) |
Typing Text Face Emoji in MacBook
You can use the same hexadecimal codes in MacBook to create the lenny face. However, you first need to change the keyboard input method to Unicode Hex Input. Follow the below steps:

Space | ( | |
Option + 0361 | ͡ | ( ͡ |
Option + 00B0 | ° | ( ͡° |
