The Best Pigs In a Blanket

These pigs in a blanket, or maybe you know them as mini crescent dogs, are about as easy to make as they are to eat. Honestly, they might just be my favorite party snack ever!

I mean, what's not to love about buttery crescent rolls combined with smokey co*cktail sausages?

Gah, they are just so, so good!

In addition to tasting delicious though, these mini hot dogs are so, so easy to make. In fact, they come together in just minutes. All you have to do is just cut up the crescent roll dough, roll up each mini hot dog in it, brush the rolled-up dough with a bit of butter, and then let 'em bake.

From start to finish, the whole recipe comes together in just 25 minutes! And it'll be even quicker if you have some helpers to help you roll up the hot dogs. My wife and 2-year-old are usually the help I enlist.

By the way, don't feel like you have to wait for a party to break out the crescent dough. I love making these mini crescent dogs as a snack since they're so quick and satisfying. I just love the buttery flavor combined with the smoky and savory co*cktail sausages.

But, if you are serving these pigs in a blanket at a party, you'll have plenty of time to work on some other party snacks while they're baking. I really like serving the blanket pigs alongside this Rotel dip, these bacon wrapped armadillo eggs, these fried oysters, and this cream cheese dip.

Ingredients

The ingredient list for these pigs in a blanket could not be simpler. In fact, I'm willing to bet you already have most - if not all - of the ingredients you'll need to make 'em at home already!

Anyway, here's everything you'll need for this recipe:

  • 6 oz. crescent rolls or puff pastry
  • 20 co*cktail sausages (mini hot dogs)
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt

Super simple stuff, right?

By the way, if you have any extra crescent roll dough, then you have to make this crescent roll breakfast casserole next! It's the perfect family breakfast or brunch platter to bring over to someone's house.

Ingredient Substitutions And Suggestions

Now, I think these pigs in a blanket taste perfect with the exact ingredients above. But, with that said, there's definitely room to modify the recipe to suit your preferences and maybe even save you a trip to the grocery store.

Swap Butter For An Egg Wash

Now, this recipe calls for melted butter to be brushed on the little piggies before baking them, but if you're running low on butter, then you can use a beaten egg instead. In fact, I sometimes like doing one after the other since the egg wash gives the pigs in a blanket a nice golden brown color.

Experiment With Add Ons

As for adding ingredients, I think these pigs in a blanket are pretty flavorful already. But, with that said, if you want to add more flavor, you can sprinkle some poppy seeds, sesame seeds, everything but the bagel seasoning, or even shredded cheddar cheese on top of 'em.

Cut Normal Hot Dogs To Size

If you don't have any co*cktail sausages on hand and don't have time to run to the store, then you can use a regular hot dog instead. Just slice it into thirds or really any size that you want. I've had to do this once or twice, and no one has really been able to tell much of a difference.

How To Make Pigs In A Blanket

As I already mentioned a couple of times, these pigs in a blanket are really easy to put together.

This recipe has only three steps - rolling out and cutting the dough, wrapping the mini dogs in the dough, and then letting them bake in the oven. Honestly, as far as easy appetizer recipes go, this pigs in a blanket recipe has to be one of the easiest.

Anyway, with that said, let's stop wasting time and get cooking!

Step 1: Prepare The Dough

First, you'll want to begin by preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C) and then line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Then, just roll the puffed pastry onto a lightly floured surface and prick the dough evenly with a fork.

Next, using a pizza cutter, separate the crescent dough on the dotted lines or cut the pastry dough into triangles.

Step 2: Wrap The Sausages

Once your dough has been cut, wrap each co*cktail sausage in a triangle of crescent dough. With that said, if there's too much dough, just cut it to fit the hot dog. Then, once you've got your dough situated on the dogs, you can transfer each one of your rolled-up uncooked pigs in a blanket to the prepared baking sheet.

Now, at this point, you can brush each one with melted butter - or a whisked egg - followed by a sprinkle of sea salt and/or sesame seeds on top.

Step 3: Bake The Pigs In A Blanket

Now that the pigs in a blanket are prepared you can bake them for about 15 minutes or until they're golden brown and the crescent roll dough is slightly crisp on top and fully cooked.

Finally, serve your pigs in a blanket warm with some ketchup, mustard, honey mustard, and/or bbq sauce.

Also, for what it's worth, they also go great with this Chick-Fil-A sauce. Enjoy!

How To Store Pigs In A Blanket

This recipe for pigs in a blanket makes about 10 servings - each one being 2 pigs in a blanket - so it's the perfect quick and easy appetizer recipe to make for a big get-together. With that said, I wouldn't expect to have any leftovers because everyone always eats them in seconds!

However, if you do end up with some leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Alternatively, if you want to store the extras for even longer, you can freeze your cooked pigs in a blanket for up to 2 months. To freeze 'em, just transfer your cooled pigs in a blanket to an airtight container or a freezer-safe bag with the excess air squeezed out and store them in the freezer.

How To Reheat Pigs In A Blanket

When you're ready to enjoy these mini crescent dogs again, you'll definitely want to reheat them first.

So, to best warm them up, I recommend placing them back on a prepared baking sheet and baking them in an oven preheated to 325°F for about 7-9 minutes - or until they are fully cooked through.

Alternatively, if you are only trying to reheat a couple of mini dogs, then you can reheat them in an air fryer set to 350°F for about 3-4 minutes or until they are thoroughly reheated.

Lastly, for the quickest reheating method of all, you can reheat your pigs in the blanket in the microwave in 30-second increments until they're hot. Usually, for me, that only takes about 1-2 minutes to happen in my microwave.

Wrapping It Up

Well, that's how to make pigs in a blanket!

I really think this is the best pigs in a blanket recipe that you'll ever make.

I don't know if it's the addictively buttery golden crescent dough or the savory mini sausages, but the combination of the two is just so, so good.

Honestly, these homemade pigs in a blanket are just to die for, and my family loves them. It's been one of our go-to appetizers for years and always gives everyone at the party something to talk about. In fact, we just made them for an NYE party, and they were a total hit.
